The ads for When In Rome state the the film is "from the studio that brought you 'The Proposal'". Yes, that's true. If you're going to market a film that way, why didn't 20th Century Fox market Meet The Spartans as "from the studio that brought you 'Titanic'"? Because tenuous connections can only get you so far, and while both When In Rome and The Proposal are both "romantic comedies", at least The Proposal had Sandra Bullock, who I'll watch in almost anything (All About Steve notwithstanding). When In Rome doesn't even have romantic, nor does it have comedy.
Like this year's other romantic stinker, Leap Year, this one has a "magical" conceit: perpetually single woman steals coins from a fountain in Rome while at her sister's wedding and has the men that threw them into the fountain fall in love with her. Seriously, who comes up with this stuff? Oh yeah, it's the guys that wrote what may have been 2009s worst movie, Old Dogs. Here, they're just repeating their old tricks of unfunny slapstick and superficial sentimentality. The actors do what they can with material, but when the material is this lame, no amount of Kristen Bell cuteness is going to help things.
It's been a rough year in rom-com, though starting the year this bad means it can only go up from here...I hope.
